The Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit (COCC) will conduct the fourth service in its 2013 series of five Sunday Lenten Vespers services at St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Ravanica.
The Very Rev. Roman Star of St. Innocent of Irkutsk Orthodox Church, Redford, president of the Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood of St. John Chrysostom of Metropolitan Detroit and spiritual advisor to the COCC, will preside at the service, assisted by other members of the Clergy Brotherhood.
The Very Rev. Andrew Yavornitzky of St. Mark Orthodox Church, Rochester Hills will be the homilist.
The Orthodox Choir of Metropolitan Detroit, conducted by Vickie Kopistiansky, artistic director,will sing during the service.
The general public as well as Orthodox Christians is invited to attend the service. Refreshments will be served afterward. All proceeds will be used for Orthodox Christian charities and COCC programs. For further information, contact the president of the COCC, Subdeacon Robert A. The COCC conducts its series of Vespers services annually during the five Sundays of Orthodox Great Lent. The last service this year will be on April 21 at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Detroit.

GOYAns, ages 11-18, are invited to retreat away from every day challenges for a weekend of growth and fellowship.

His Right Reverend Alexander Golitzin is the Bishop of the Bulgarian Diocese (OCA). The son of Prince George Golitzin (Producer of the 1961 “The Parent Trap”), he was born in 1948 and received a BA in English from UC-Berkeley. He eventually earned a D.Phil. in Theology at Oxford University. Bishop Alexander was a professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for 23 years, until his consecration as Bishop in 2012.
He has published a number of articles, and is well known for his work in Eastern Christian ascetical and mystical tradition.
Cost includes: speaker stipend, all meals, hospitality from the monastery.

A beginning/intermediate iconography course will be held in the iconographer’s studio, in Gaithersburg, Maryland (Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area). Click here for a flyer with more information. ABOUT THE COURSE: This course will introduce students to Byzantine iconography. It is intended for beginners and those on an intermediate level. Over the three days, we will create a half-figure icon (St. Nino, Apostle to Georgia) in egg tempera. Step-by-step instruction will be provided. No gilding will be involved.
OPEN FRIDAYS. The studio has an Open Friday program, for students who have the ability to paint alone but run into questions as they work. Come sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., bringing with you the icon you are working on and your own supplies. If you intend to start a new one, bring any requisite materials along with your ideas. As you work on the icon Colette and fellow students will be available for advice, direction, and discussion. This is also a chance for members to stay abreast of developments in iconography and the Orthodox world. Cost is $20 per person. Come and join the fellowship. Traditional, one-on-one lessons are always available through private arrangement.

The Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Demetri Carellas is the chaplain of the Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Saxonburg, PA. He was our Men’s Retreat speaker at Brooks in 1999 and we are blessed and very glad to have him back again. Fr. Demetri is the spiritual father of many hundreds of folks throughout the United States and has been the speaker and teacher at countless retreats here and across our land. This will be a great week-end of spiritual inspiration and fellowship.
The Retreat is next to Brooks Memorial State Park. The cabins and lodge at Brook’s Memorial Park next to the monastery have been reserved. Please get your registration in soon. The cabins fill up quickly.

There is a newly-established Pan-Orthodox Christian Mission in Potsdam with a campus ministry outreach.
It is under the OCA Diocese of New York/New Jersey in cooperation with the OCA Archdiocese of Canada and the Monastic Community of St. Silouan, Johnstown, ON. Members of this parish are from all ethnic backgrounds: Greek, Russian, Albanian, Ukranian, Serbian, Eritrean and just plain American. Services are primarily in English and the musicchanted is from both the Byzantine and Russian traditions. The community is a mix of students, post-doctoral researchers and familes; of cradle-orthodox and converts to the Faith. The priests, Fr. David Edwards and Fr. Luke Majoros (when Fr. David is unavailable), are both hieromonks from the Monastic Community of St. Silouan. Parishioners frequently worship at St. Silouan’s on weeks when there are no services in Potsdam. The aim is to serve people who until now had to cross the Canadian border or travel 70 miles to the nearest parish on the U.S. side. Services are held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month on the campus or, when space is not available, in a private chapel.
There will be worship services on the first and third Sunday of each month beginning Feb. 5. Parking is available in lots 17 and 25. All are welcome to experience this ancient yet contemporary Christian form of worship.

We need volunteers to help us to serve breakfast at the Shelter.
We are a community of Orthodox Christians from all over the Detroit area committed to serving Christ through service to the needy in our city (Mt 25.14).
Our goals are simply to love God and love others (Mt 22.37-40). Recognizing the image of God in every person (Gn 1.27), we will always strive to serve with humilty, compassion, patience, and above all, love (1Co 13).
Our purpose is to extend the Church beyond the confines of the parish and bring it into the local community. We will do this by bringing Detroit-area Orthodox Christians together to perform the work to which Christ called his Church: to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, to look after the sick and visit the incarcerated, to welcome the stranger, to give everything we have for the benefit of those in need.
Orthodox Detroit Outreach will strive first and foremost to fulfill the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, being faithful to the Apostolic teachings and Living Tradition of the Orthodox Christian Church. We seek to be known by the fruits of our ministry.
We will actively and in an ongoing manner strive to assess the needs of those within the greater Detroit metropolitan area, providing through various ministrations towards the material sustenance and spiritual aid to those in need.
We will serve the churches of our area by providing both local and coordinated ministries aiding those in need, and offering an educational and experiential resource as requested.
