Choosing a Teenage Patron Saint
With the Blessing of the Council of Bishops, the Offices of Youth & Young Adult Ministry would like to announce choosing a patron saint for the youth of our Archdiocese. This program is designed to give our youth the opportunity to learn about teenage saints of the church and use their voice in selecting one of them to intercede on their behalf with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Beginning June 15, 2015 the lives of saints Julianna of Olshansk, Christina of Tyre, Julian of Tarsus and Ihor of Chernihiv will be made available on the OYM website. We ask that the youth prayerfully consider who should be their patron. Voting may be done on-line at the same place as the saints lives. International Medieval Congress 2016: Bursary application In order to keep the IMC accessible to as many delegates as possible, we endeavour to keep charges affordable, and offer a limited number of bursaries for those who are eligible. These include students, independent scholars, pensioners, and delegates from Central and Eastern Europe. The bursaries range in value from £50 to £200 and may cover all of part of the Registration and Programming Fee, accommodation and meals. Please note that no travel grants are available. Applicants are strongly advised to seek other sources of support as they are more likely to receive a partial than a full bursary. The IMC bursary application form closes on 18 October 2015, so all applications should be submitted by midnight (British Summer Time) on 17 October 2015. Four Evening Courses Open to Public in Fall.  From September 1, 2015 – December 15, 2015 St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary will offer four courses to the general public starting in September 2015, giving non-degree students opportunities to increase their knowledge about the Orthodox Christian faith. The classes, to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, require no prior coursework at the seminary and will cover: religious themes in film, liturgical space and practice, an exploration of the Book of Genesis, and spiritual life. The procession will take place over the Labor Day weekend (September 4-7, 2015) and cover approximately 35 miles. During this procession the participants will not only visibly and openly bring Orthodox Christianity to those outside the Church, but also will participate fully in the life of the Church by preparing together and partaking of the Holy Mysteries each day of the pilgrimage. Zedashe, a Georgian vocal ensemble from the medieval fortress city of Sighnaghi in Eastern Georgia, will be performing  at St. Mary’s on September 11.  Steeped in the ancient musical traditions of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Zedashe will present a concert of liturgical hymns and melodies that will transport the listener to a time and place long forgotten by the Western world. Also, for those enthusiasts who really want to know more about Georgian music Zedashe will offer a workshop on Saturday, September 12 in the Parish Center from 9:30 till noon. KU Leuven will convene an international conference on ‘Language and Culture in Early Christianity’.  The conference will approach the subject from two perspectives: (I) A context-oriented perspective, focusing on the linguistic horizon, the cultural background, and the sociohistorical setting of Early Christian approaches to language(s).(II) A content-oriented perspective, focusing on arguments, views or intuitions expressed with regard to: the origin of language; language functions (both cognitive-semiotic and cultural-anthropological); the connections between language, culture and ethnicity; language variation and global linguistic diversity; the relevance of language to theology; the role of language in ancient education; problems of translation and the general issue of translatability; the “qualities” and “deficiencies” of particular languages. Patriarch Irinej of Serbia to Deliver Address at St. Vladimir's Seminary @ Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, Metropolitan Philip Auditorium of the John G. Rangos Family Building, | Yonkers | New York | United States
On Friday, September 11, 2015, the Board of Trustees and Faculty of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary will bestow a Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa, upon His Holiness Irinej (Gavrilovic), archbishop of Pec, metropolitan of Belgrade-Karlovci, and patriarch of Serbia. Patriarch Irinej will also deliver a presentation titled “Theology as a Hope for the Future of the Church.” The patriarch will arrive on the seminary campus, briefly visit Three Hierarchs Chapel, and then proceed to the Academic Convocation. The public ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium of the John G. Rangos Family Building, and will include a Q & A session between the patriarch and attendees.
