The Thirty-Ninth Annual Byzantine Studies Conference (BSC) will be held at Yale University from October 31st through November 3rd. The conference is the annual forum for the presentation and discussion of papers on every aspect of Byzantine Studies, and is open to all, regardless of nationality or academic status. Paper proposals are being accepted through April 1st, and papers may be on any aspect of Byzantine Studies. For more information on the required format for paper abstracts and on how to submit your proposal, see the official call for papers.
The Byzantine Studies Conference was founded in 1975 (read a short history of the BSC). It is a venue for the presentation and discussion of papers embodying current research on all aspects of Byzantine history and culture. The BSC meets in October or November in a different city every year. Approximately 75 papers are presented and discussed in a relaxed but professional atmosphere. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to attend and may compete for prizes for the best papers. The BSC is also the occasion for the annual BSANA business meeting. BSANA is incorporated in the state of Florida.

One of the most beautiful and yet difficult things in life is that of blending two lives into one this sacrament of marriage. Our Metropolis continues to provide Marriage Preparation Seminars which are offered in six locations throughout New England.
This four-hour marriage preparation course is offered at the Metropolis Center 8 times each year. The program has been developed and expanded to include instruction, couples activities, and group discussion on the nature of marriage, the struggles along the way, and strategies for preparing for this journey. Although many couples openly report that they are skeptical about spending a half day on their preparation for marriage, by the end of the semester, nearly all of them have reported learning a lot about marriage and appreciating the time spent as couples discussing the issues they will encounter once married. Most of the couples are Inter-faith, and many overwhelmed with the logistics of planning a wedding. In the midst of the pressures on their time, many would not take the time to talk about issues related to their marriage if it were not a requirement of our Metropolis. “The Old Testament: Law, Prophets and Writings” is the theme of a new course offered by the Diocese of the Midwest Catechist and Diaconal Vocations Program.Sessions will be held at Christ the Savior Church, Chicago, and Saint Makarios Mission, Hyde Park, from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. beginning Saturday, December 1, 2012. The course will give special emphasis to the Pentateuch, Deuteronomic History, the Prophets from the Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, and Persian periods, and Psalms, Wisdom, and Daniel.
Matushka Rebecca Luft and Mr. Eric Jobe, Ph.D. candidates and biblical scholars, will teach the course, the second in the program cycle. New as well as ongoing students are welcome.

On March 31, 2013, the Sunday of St Gregory Palamas, Dr. Christopher Veniamin will be the keynote speaker at Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church in Westchester IL, for their annual “Celebration of Books”. This week-long annual event is in its 29th year and is one of the more anticipated pan-orthodox gatherings in the Chicago area.
Dr. Christopher will also offer the sermon during the Sunday Liturgy, on St. Gregory Palamas, and also a presentation, entitled, “St Gregory Palamas and the Second Sunday of Great Lent“, which will be given following Great Compline later that same day.
Tuesday, April 2nd-Reverend Dr. John Chryssavgis-“Creation Care and the Spiritual Life: Transforming Perspectives and Practices”. Compline Service begins at 6:30 p.m and the presentation will begin around 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 4th-Reverend Dr. Theodore Stylianopoulos-“The Apocalypse: Message and Medium”. Compline Service begins at 6:30 p.m and the presentation will begin around 8:00 p.m.

The Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit (COCC) will conduct the second service in its 2013 series of five Sunday Lenten Vespers services on March 31, Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas.
The Very Rev. Roman Star of St. Innocent of Irkutsk Orthodox Church, Redford, president of the Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood of St. John Chrysostom of Metropolitan Detroit and spiritual advisor to the COCC, will preside at the service, assisted by other members of the Clergy Brotherhood.
The Most Rev. Justinian, archbishop of Naro-Fominsk and administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church in the United States, will attend the service.
The Rev. John Wehling of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, Livonia will be the homilist.
The Orthodox Choir of Metropolitan Detroit, conducted by Vickie Kopistiansky, artistic director, will sing during the service.
The general public as well as Orthodox Christians is invited to attend the service. Refreshments will be served afterward. All proceeds will be used for Orthodox Christian charities and COCC programs.
The COCC conducts its series of Vespers services annually during the five Sundays of Orthodox Great Lent. The remaining three services this year will be on April 7 at the Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, St. Clair Shores; April 14 at St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Ravanica, Detroit; and April 21 at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Detroit.

The Zedashe Ensemble is based in the medieval fortress city of Sighnaghi, Eastern Georgia, which has been home to the Kiziqian wine growers and warriors since ancient times. Directed by Ketevan Mindorashvili, the current incarnation of the ensemble was founded in the mid 1990s to sing repertoire largely lost during the Communist era. Their repertoire consists of ancient three-part harmony chants from the Orthodox Christian liturgy, folk songs from the Kiziqian region as collected from village song-masters and old publications, and folk dances from the region.

With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Anthony, we are very excited to announce the 2nd Annual Midwest Young Adult Retreat to be held at the Maranatha Retreat Center in Muskegon, MI, on beautiful Lake Michigan. This year, we welcome Fr. Michael Nasser, the Pastor of Holy Apostles Mission in Bowling Green, KY, as our guest speaker for the weekend. Many of our young people remember him for his many years of service as the former Camp Director at the Antiochian Village and his mission work at Project Mexico. Fr. Michael is a dynamic speaker, whose talks will surely challenge and inspire us in the faith.
Maranatha is a beautiful retreat center with hotel-style accommodations, and is right on the lake. Lodging, meals, and the retreat will all take place at the retreat center. We hope to build on the success of last year’s Young Adult Retreat which was held in Livonia, MI, and was attended by 70 Young Adults from throughout our Diocese.

I ask that you please share this information with the Young Adults of your parish. The retreat is open to all college age, young professionals, and young adults (ages 18-40).
