The Christian Kitchen is a ministry of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, dedicated to fulfilling Matthew 25 and is made up of volunteers who donate clothing, items of need, and their time to make sandwiches, soup, desserts, refreshments and then distribute the fruit of their labors to men and women who are poor and/or live on the streets of Long Island and Manhattan.
The ministry is more than feeding people, it’s about sharing the Light of Christ with those who have barely anything. The goal is not just to feed but to create relationships with the homeless. We want to bring light into a world that can be very dark at times. We eat together, pray together, and cry together. We try to meet not just physical, but spiritual needs. We try to provide resources to help with medical, drug, family, or housing issues. It is a very blessed ministry and its volunteers are critical to its success.

Come and volunteer on a soup run!We feed the hungry in Manhattan on most Wednesday nights. During Great Lent, the schedule changes to Tuesday evenings. Other opportunities for serving are also available. Just check the calendar before coming or call the rectory at 516-483-3649.

Every year from December-March, St. Paraskevi hosts our brothers and sisters in need of warm beds and hot meals every Thursday evenings until early Friday mornings during these cold winter months. We are in need of volunteers to either donate their time in various shifts to assist our guests on site or provide dinners and lunches for them. Shifts to help meet, feed and assist the guests are Thursday evenings 5:30-8:30pm; 8:30-11:30pm; Thursday overnight 11:30pm-5:30am and Friday mornings 5:00-7:30am. Volunteers are especially needed for the Thursday overnight and Friday morning shifts. If you would like to either donate your time to help cover one of the shifts or donate supplies, please contact Demetra Doscas at 631-553-0720. If you are interested in preparing either dinner or lunch meals during the Homeless Ministry season in any way, please contact Anastasia Geotes at 516-922-3854. The theme of the conference is “Antecedents and Subsequents of Iosif Volotsky: Exploring Eastern Christian Concerns” (2015 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Iosif Volotsky, founder of the Iosif-Volokolamsk Monastery), yet it is designed to “embrace topics from any period, and all regions related to Eastern Christian groups…. The topic is broadly conceived to address the interests and concerns of Iosif, a monastic reformer, whose life and work influenced the religious culture of Muscovy as well as modern scholarship of his period. Iosif’s interests encompassed the multi-faceted issues of religious and spiritual life and ranged from monastic reform to patristics, liturgics, education, administration, spirituality, heresy, and secular Christian life, among others.”
The Association for the Study of Eastern Christian History and Culture (ASEC) is a non-confessionl scholarly organization that is dedicated to promoting research, scholarship, and multi-disciplinary inquiry on cultures influenced by the various branches of Eastern Christianity. The Pan Orthodox Tournament has been held every year since 1968 in mid-March, and sees 60-70 Orthodox teams from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Ontario, Wisconsin and other states compete in the 3-day weekend event. Each division has winner’s bracket and a consolation bracket, and all teams are guaranteed a minimum of 2 games. Awards are given to each division’s Champion, Runner-Up and Consolation Champion, and an All-Tournament Team in all divisions, except for the Biddys.
The 2012 Pan Orthodox Tournament was another big success and we would like to thank all the players, coaches, parents, churches and all the fans who supported this event.

Speaker: Andrew Walsh, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor at Trinity College). Dr. Andrew Walsh not only serves the St. George community tirelessly in many way, but is also its own “scholar-in-residence.” He holds degrees from Trinity College, Yale Divinity School, and Harvard University, where he earned a Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization. A prolific writer, Andrew worked for the Hartford Courant, for six years serving as a reporter, bureau chief, and religion writer, and is managing editor of Religion in the News. He is currently assistant professor at Trinity College and the associate director of the Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life.

Our Cathedral Lecture Series will consist of five lectures by persons chosen for their excellence as teachers. The series will be held on five Sundays during the ecclesiastic year at 5 pm in the afternoon to which parishioners of all ages are invited. Attendees will have the opportunity to grow in the knowledge of our faith by listening to the presenters, by participating in a question and answer period following each lecture, and by meeting the speakers informally at a coffee hour after each session. Start your Lent with a spiritual boost! Join us at the Cathedral on Saturday, March 23 for our Annual Lenten Retreat.
This year, we bring you two speakers: Klaus Kenneth and Dr. Christopher Veniamin. Mr. Kenneth is a world-renowned speaker on Orthodoxy, whose conversion story has become a bestseller in Europe. Dr. Veniamin is an Oxford graduate and Professor of Patristics at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Seminary. Both speakers were spiritual sons of Elder Sophrony (Sakharov) of St. John Monastery in Essex.
The retreat is scheduled to begin with Divine Liturgy in the morning and will run until Vespers. Mr. Kenneth will be speaking on his journey to the Orthodox Faith as featured in his book, Born to Hate Reborn to Love: A Spiritual Odyssey from Head to Heart. At 1:30 Dr. Christopher will begin speaking on “The Life and Teaching of Elder Sophrony of Essex.”
The Divine Liturgy will begin at 8:30 AM for those who wish to attend. The Retreat will begin at 10:30 AM with a brief Molieban. Lunch will be provided to those attending. Vespers will begin by 3:30 PM, after the presentations conclude. Mr. Kenneth will be available to sign copies of his book during the afternoon.

The Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit (COCC) will observe the first Sunday of Orthodox Great Lent with a service of Great Vespers at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. The service will be part of the Cathedral’s observation of its patronal feast, the Annunciation of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), which occurs March 25 on the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
The Most Rev. Nicholas, metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit, will preside at the service, assisted by the Rev. Fr. Dean Hountalas,Vicar General or the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit, and the Very Rev. Roman Star, pastor of St. Innocent of Irkutsk Orthodox Church, Redford, and president of the Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood of St. John Chrysostom of Metropolitan Detroit.
The Very Rev. George Shalhoub of the Antiochian Orthodox Basilica of St. Mary in Livonia will deliver a homily in English. The Very Rev. Michael Varlamos of the Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in St. Clair Shores will deliver a homily in Greek. The Very Rev. The COCC, a 56-year-old clergy and lay association that represents various canonical Orthodox churches in metropolitan Detroit, traditionally conducts its own series of Lenten Vespers services on the five Sundays of Great Lent beginning with the Sunday of Orthodoxy.
