Iconographer: Philip Davydov The true fresco technique is also known as “buon bresco” or “affresco”. The principle of true fresco technique is following: painting process is performed over a thin layer of freshly applied lime based plaster. The paint is absorbed immediately and feels literally like releasing a bird. Pigments are mixed up just with water with no binder or glue. The painting process is performed over a thin layer of freshly applied lime based mortar or plaster. After a number of hours the plaster reacts with the air in a process called carbonatation. This chemical reaction fixes the pigment particles at the plaster’s surface in a very thin protective crystalline mesh known as the lime crust. With the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall. The team will be traveling to Arkhangelsk and to the Monastery of St. Artemy of Verkola to do work assisting the monks there. Instructors: Rassem El Massih & Greg Abdalah Registration is open to campers ages 14-17, or entering the 9th grade. Campers will focus on two tones throughout the session and will break off into beginner and intermediate levels with the chanting instructors. Campers will be introduced to Byzantine Notation, which is an ancient method for writing liturgical music and is still used today in Churches following the Byzantine tradition. Campers will learn the Greek scale (Ni, Pa, Vou, Gha, Dhi, Ke, Zo, Ni), how to read the music, and the theory behind it. 2015 Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI)
The Hilandar Research Library (HRL), the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS), and the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures (DSEELC) at The Ohio State University will host the biennial four-week intensive 2015 Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI) for qualified graduate students in Columbus, Ohio. Participants work with original Cyrillic manuscripts dating back to the 15th through 19th centuries in the HRL collection. Manuscript material on microform from the Hilandar Research Library’s extensive holding forms a large part of the lectures and exercises. The Institute includes two courses: Practical Slavic Palaeography and Readings in Church Slavonic as the Medieval Slavic Workshop (Slavic 8741). There is also a program of lectures on related topics in addition to other activities. All lectures are in English. This is a separate two-day gilding workshop. This course will teach students the technique of water gilding. Water gilding is a traditional and highly skilled technique used for the gilding of icons. During this workshop we will learn all the stages of water gilding using 22 carats gold. Beginning with the preparation of the board which is done by applying linen then covering with many layers of gesso. The last stage of the process is applying the clay bole and finally burnishing the gold with an agate stone which results in gold that is smooth and shines like a mirror.
