Under the guidance of Vladislav Andrejev, students will study the techniques of painting icons, including transferring the image, applying gold leaf, mixing pigments, using the “floating” egg tempera technique, and lettering in the traditional style. Students will use natural materials and the traditional multi-step process to paint their own icons of Archangel Michael. Previous students can make special arrangements with the instructor to paint another subject for their icon workshop. Project Mexico Home-building
Aug 10 – Aug 16 all-day

Day 1: The Foundation The group leaves the orphanage property excited for their first day on-site. Once they arrive at the site, they begin with a prayer. From there, the cement floor is mixed by hand in tubs. Volunteers screed, tamp and float the concrete throughout the day. Anchor bolts are also set within the foundation to mount and attach the walls. At the end of the day, they all go home tired and dirty!

Since 1988, Project Mexico & St. Innocent Orphanage has been building secure, safe and weather-tight homes for some of the most impoverished families in northern Mexico. Built strictly by volunteer labor, these homes provide families economic security and hope for a brighter future. While serving these families, the volunteers discover that they have been transformed. Through their service to others, they realize that they have received much more than they had given. To date, we have hosted well over 11,000 volunteers on our 16 acre ranch as we continue to humbly bear the burdens of others in the name of Christ.

Week of August 19-25 also has available slots.

Hexaemeron Icon Carving Workshop: AK
Aug 14 – Aug 20 all-day

SIX DAYS OF CREATION courses in icon carving are open to 12 students at each site. This ancient art is taught through both practical work and theory. From the earliest sarcophagi to lavish ivory miniatures to the austere Russian low reliefs, icon carving has been a vibrant part of the Orthodox Tradition. Students will have the opportunity to carve either in either wood or stone. Those wishing to carve in wood are expected to have a basic understanding of woodworking as the course will focus on carving rather than technical aspects like laminating panels or sharpening tools. Although tools will be available, students should bring whatever gouges they have, ideally 1 straight gouge, 1 scoop gouge and 1 “V” gouge. For those wishing to carve stone, tools will be made available. Each student is expected to leave with at least one finished icon by the end of the class.
