Jan18Friday: 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
St. Vladimir’s Seminary is pleased to announce Dr. Peter Brown, Princeton University’s Philip and Beulah Rollins Professor of History, Emeritus, as the presenter for the 30th Annual Father Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture entitled: ”Constantine, Eusebius, and the Future of Christianity.” The lecture will focus on how Christians approach the study of history.
Dr. Brown is credited with having created the field of study referred to as “late antiquity” (A.D. 250–800), the period during which Rome fell, the three major monotheistic religions took shape, and Christianity spread across Europe. A native of Ireland, Professor Brown earned his B.A. in history from Oxford University (1956), where he taught until 1975 as a Fellow of All Souls College. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1986 after teaching at the University of London and the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Brown’s primary interests are the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages and the rise of Christianity, and he has pursued them through investigations into such diverse topics as Roman rhetoric, the cult of the saints, the body and sexuality, and wealth and poverty.
Dr. Brown’s presentation will launch the 75th anniversary year of the Seminary (founded 1938), and will be followed by other Jubilee events, culminating in a gala banquet November 7, 2013, at the Glen Island Harbour Club, New Rochelle, NY.

The Winter Soulstice Retreat: Eastern Orthodox Christian Spirituality with Dr. V. Bruce Rigdon Distinguished scholar, Church historian, authority on Eastern Orthodoxy retreat is sponsored by The North Carolina Academy for Spiritual Formation.
The Greek and Russian Orthodox churches whose roots extend back to the very beginnings of Christian history have much to teach us about how the Christian faith has evolved through the centuries. During this retreat, Dr. Rigdon will help us to experience the Jesus prayer, look at the way Easter is celebrated, from learning to “read” icons to singing Orthodox prayers, from comparing theological themes to looking at the ways that biblical stories are interpreted. All of these ways will help us to understand how many of our traditions were shaped.
Registration forms available here or email Laura Cromley for further information.

Young Adult Ministries (YAM) is a Pan-Orthodox ministry for the young adult Orthodox in the Houston Texas area. Our mission is to cultivate and educate our young adults, leading them to the fullness of the Faith and likeness of God; by utilizing the four circles of Christian living, Worship, Fellowship, Service, and Witness, young adults are integrated into the life of the Church enabling them to become active members of the body of Christ.
Service Project at the Beacon Day Center: The Beacon is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. More than 85% of Beacon services are operated by volunteers. The Beacon serves approximately 600 clients daily and, some days, surpasses 750 clients. One of the most important services provided by The Beacon is case management. Our goal is to do more than simply feed people and put them back on the street. The Beacon is helping clients identify, locate, and access services that can help them address the root causes of their homelessness and begin the journey towards moving off of the streets and becoming self-sufficient. Case management guides clients through a complex system, providing tools that ultimately lead to increased stability.
