Women & Diaconal Ministry in the Orthodox Church: Past, Present & Future @ Union Theological Seminary | New York | New York | United States
Source: St. Phoebe Center for the History of the Deaconess St. Phoebe Center for the History of the Deaconess will host its first conference titled Women & Diaconal Ministry in the Orthodox Church: Past, Present & Future on Saturday, December 6, 2014  from 9 am to 5 pm at Union Theological Seminary  in Manhattan. The conference will provide presentations and discussions on why an ordained ministry is necessary; how a deaconess would/could serve today; and what short-term and long-term steps could be taken for restoration of the female diaconate. Speakers from various areas of social outreach will discuss diaconal work in the present such as pastoral care, ministry of the Word, and chaplaincy. A session will also will support the restoration of the female diaconate with an overview of the comprehensive research that has already conducted on it history, theological apologetics, and recent attempts at restoration of the female diaconate in Greece and[...]
Ascention Liturgical Choir 44th Annual Christmas Concert: Oakland, CA @ Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedra | Oakland | California | United States
“An International Christmas” . The free concert features special guests Paraguayan harpist Carlos Reyes, acclaimed soprano Susan Gundunas, baritone Peter Tuff,  and the Kairos Youth Choir, accompanied by members of the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra joined by Ascension musicians and the Ascension Liturgical Choir with Ascension organist Anna Counelis and pianist Arkadi Serper. The program highlights traditional carols, Greek Orthodox Christmas hymns, excerpts from Handel’s Messiah as well as a brief sing-along. Ascension Liturgical Choir is under the direction of  Laura Kakis Serper who will also conduct the concert. Special guest director Dr. Tikey Zes will conduct the Orthodox Christmas hymns.  The Young People’s Symphony Orchestra   is California’s oldest youth orchestra and the second oldest youth orchestra in the U.S. YPSO is under the direction of David Ramadanoff. Kairos Youth Choir  is also under the direction of  Kakis Serper. The International Conference on Patristic Studies in Oxford is a four-yearly gathering of scholars from around the world that has become a major event for the many disciplines concerned with patristics. The proceedings of the conferences are peer reviewed and published in the series  Studia Patristica. Abstracts and proposals for the seventeenth conference are being accepted from August 2014, with a submission deadline of December 31st, 2014.
