Slavyanka is a men’s a cappella chorus based in San Francisco, California, and made up of amateur musicians from varied professions, including computer programmers, scientists, lawyers, and businessmen. The musical demands placed on the Chorus are quite high both because of technical content of the music and the nearly four octave range often required to sing it. We perform most of our music in Russian, though most of us do not speak Russian. Our chorus consists of 25 singers united by a common interest in the choral music of the peoples of Russia and Eastern Europe. This four-hour marriage preparation course is offered at the Metropolis Center 8 times each year. The program has been developed and expanded to include instruction, couples activities, and group discussion on the nature of marriage, the struggles along the way, and strategies for preparing for this journey. Although many couples openly report that they are skeptical about spending a half day on their preparation for marriage, by the end of the semester, nearly all of them have reported learning a lot about marriage and appreciating the time spent as couples discussing the issues they will encounter once married. Most of the couples are Inter-faith, and many overwhelmed with the logistics of planning a wedding. In the midst of the pressures on their time, many would not take the time to talk about issues related to their marriage if it were not a requirement of our Metropolis. As we continue to finalize the program, couples are requesting additional opportunities for retreats directed at young couples. We look forward to working towards that as we complete the work on this pre-marital program.
There are several sessions held on different dates at different locations. For more information: http://www.boston.goarch.org/news/marriage_preparation_seminars.htm

A two week immersion course is offered at Hellenic College, Monday through Friday
His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta and His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston have offered their blessings for this program. Dr. Anton Vrame, Director of the Religious Education Department for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, endorses the course and hopes to see it flourish.
Fostering the spiritual formation of Orthodox children means beginning as early as possible. The classroom, called the Children’s Room, is a specially prepared environment designed to satisfy the child’s natural inclination to movement and to spirituality by providing hands-on biblical and liturgical activity.
The course provides adults with all that is necessary to set up a proper weekly program or a home school religious curriculum.
Catherine Varkas, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, MA is Founder Director of a Nationally Accredited Teacher Training Center, and a Montessori Specialist.
“The spiritual faculty, the Nous of the baptized infant knows God through immediate experience.” (The Philokalia)
