24th International Medieval Congress (2017), Call for Papers
How to Propose a Session The Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture seeks proposals for a Mary Jaharis Center sponsored session at the 24th International Medieval Congress, University of Leeds, July 3–6, 2017. We invite session proposals on any topic relevant to Byzantine studies. The thematic strand for the 2017 IMC is “Otherness.” See the IMC Call for Papers for additional information about the theme and suggested areas of discussion. All alumni are welcome to attend at no cost, and there will be an opportunity for those who live far away to register for an online broadcast of the seminars and annual meeting. Hexaemeron Icon Carving Workshop @ Diakonia Center Metropolis of Atlanta | Salem | South Carolina | United States
 SIX DAYS OF CREATION courses in icon carving are open to 10 students at each site. This ancient art is taught through both practical work and theory. From the earliest sarcophagi to lavish ivory miniatures to the austere Russian low reliefs, icon carving has been a vibrant part of the Orthodox Tradition. Students will have the opportunity to carve either in either wood or stone. Those wishing to carve in wood are expected to have a basic understanding of woodworking as the course will focus on carving rather than technical aspects like laminating panels or sharpening tools. Although tools will be available, students should bring whatever gouges they have, ideally 1 straight gouge, 1 scoop gouge and 1 “V” gouge. |The Lana Schwebel Memorial Lecture in Religion and Literature. Renowned as a “poet of witness,” Carolyn Forché is the author of four books of poetry. Her first poetry collection, Gathering The Tribes (Yale University Press, 1976), won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award. In 1977, she traveled to Spain to translate the work of Salvadoran-exiled poet Claribel Alegrí­a, and upon her return, received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, which enabled her to travel to El Salvador, where she worked as a human rights advocate. Her second book, The Country Between Us (Harper and Row, 1982), received the Poetry Society of America’s Alice Fay di Castagnola Award, and was also the Lamont Selection of the Academy of American Poets. Her third book of poetry, The Angel of History (HarperCollins, 1994), was chosen for The Los Angeles Times Book Award. Blue Hour is her fourth collection of poems (HarperCollins, 2003).[...]
