Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko reposed in the Lord on March 18 of this year. He was an influential figure in American Orthodoxy, in part due to his long tenure at St. Vladimir’s Seminary and in part due to the popular nature of his lectures, talks, and writings.

He spoke well and spoke frequently, addressing himself most especially to lay people and clergy. He was a pastor by nature, concerned with the life of the Church and its witness to the modern world.

Several years ago, he published 55 “maxims” about the spiritual life, intended to inspire Christians of all levels of commitment to deeper discipleship, prayer, and spiritual practice.

Following Fr. Tom’s death, the maxims were republished in numerous venues online and shared widely on social media.  An animated version of Fr. Hopko’s 55 Maxims was recently posted to youtube. It is visually attractive and meditative, set to the St. Vladimir’s choir signing “Lord, I Have Cried” from Vespers.

Let us know what you think of the video, and which maxims speak most powerfully to you.
