Source: Greek News Boston, MA – By Apostolos Zoupaniotis Photos: Dimitrios Panagos During the various discussions that took place at the 44th Clergy Laity Congress on the financial crisis of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, one thing that was proven beyond reasonable doubt was that for at least two past Congresses the delegates were passing fictional budgets that had no chance to ever be balanced; contributing thus to accumulating deficits that were covered by illegal transfers from restricted accounts. The difference between those Congress and the 44th Clergy Laity Congress is that then, people were presented with false information and their vote was…

Source: The National Herald By Theodoros Kalmoukos BOSTON, MA – There is only one essential change in the program of the upcoming 44th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, to be held at Copley Marriott in Boston, MA, July 1-5. On July 2, after Archbishop Demetrios’ keynote address, the theme being “All Things Are Possible to the One Who Believes in Christ” (Mark 9:23), the delegates will not form the usual small groups to discuss and analyze the archbishop’s speech, as is usually the case. Instead, there will be a three-hour open forum (2-5PM) to discuss…

Source: The National Herald By Theodoros Kalmoukos NEW YORK – The economic situation of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is much more serious than thought before. The National Herald has learned from within the recent meeting of the Archdiocesan Council that the deficit actually is $12.75 million. The deficit includes a transfer of $4.75 million made from the restricted accountsof which $2.5 million was from St. Nicholas at Ground Zero rebuilding fund. The transfers were made to the Archdiocese’s general operating accounts, which violates is own regulations and may cause legal problems. Another $4 million is in deficit since…

Source: Orthodox Christian Laity The theme of the 42nd Clergy Laity Congress, “The Orthodox Christian Family: A Dwelling of Christ and A Witness of His Gospel,” is very appropriate for us in this time of transition.   For it is truly within the home that the Orthodox faith will be learned, survive and grow by the example and actions of each of us.  However, for many, parish life and archdiocesan settings are an antithesis to the theme of the 42nd Congress.  HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE On September 18, 1999, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios was enthroned as the sixth Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox…

By C. A. Constantopoulos, Ph.D. “Would an event ‒ let’s say a baseball game ‒ played in a 50,000-seat stadium, attended by 30,000 ticket holders, be a ‘successful’ one?” “That would depend on how the game ends.” “What if, in the bottom of the second inning, the electronic billboard is flashing, ‘Success’?” “The franchise-owned concessionaire is trying to get people to drink more beer.” “What’s wrong with drinking more beer?” “It has nothing to do with what’s flashing when the game is over.” How true it is: With their Archbishop having humorously professed his predilection for numbers and statistics, Orthodox…

Source: The National Herald | George Matsoukas, Executive Director of Orthodox Christian Laity Having looked over the information concerning the recently completed National Assembly of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, which took place in Phoenix, AZ and having talked to some members of my local community in Southeast Florida who attended, I conclude that there were no workshops, discussions, or information presented on the work of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America. Unity of the Orthodox in America was not on the conference’s agenda. I find this amazing and shocking. The 14 Patriarchs of the worldwide…
