Source: Serbian Orthodox Church As the ‎new roof starts taking its form, atop our beloved New York City Cathedral, the saving of Saint Sava Cathedral has truly begun. The principal steel roof trusses are now in place, bolted and welded, tying together the previously freestanding historic stone walls. With the imminent installation of the metal-deck roof covering – presently stacked on the roof framing and ready for distribution, as seen in the photos – the trusses will become further braced laterally, thereby contributing to the general stability of the building as a whole. There has been much preparatory work, of course,…

This editorial was first published in www.mignatiou.com (In English and in Greek) on October 17, 2015, the day before the ground breaking ceremony for Saint Nicholas Church at Ground Zero. This year’s feast of Saint Nicholas coincides with a renewed effort to finish the semi-constructed Church: a new committee was just appointed by Archbishop Demetrios. I believe it falls upon all of us to assist in this historical task, leaving aside for the moment the search for those responsible for financial scandals. The time will come for them to be punished as the law provides; they are already sentenced in our…

Source: The National Herald By Theodore Kalmoukos In covering the visit of Elder Ephraim, Abbot of the Vatopaidi Monastery on Mt. Athos, to the United States, I had the opportunity last week to visit the St. Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero in New York, and really it was a very painful and heartbreaking sight, and experience. I had not visited there in quite a while, and seeing what I saw was quite a traumatic shock. The building was locked, as construction halted nine months earlier due to the Archdiocese’s lack of funds, which ultimately caused it to mortgage its…

Source: The National Herald By Theodoros Kalmoukos BOSTON – On Friday March 30, a Grand Jury was formed to investigate the subject of the finances of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center. The New York State Attorney General will also undertake an investigation of the Archdiocese finances. The aforementioned Authorities have already informed the Archdiocese and have subpoenaed all documents and information in printed and electronic form, including e-mails and text messages, and everything related to these two cases. On March 30, the Legal Committee of the Archdiocese, chaired by Mrs. Kathy Walsh,…

Source: St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary Last month I received an email that stunned me. The correspondent indicated that within his diocese he could not recall recently encountering a young priest educated at St. Vladimir’s. His perception was that St. Vladimir’s was producing very few priests to serve in local parishes in the U.S. Such misperception is in need of correction, so let me offer some facts (which I also shared with the amiable but not fully informed correspondent). For the past 17 years here at the Seminary, I have observed a predictable annual cycle: seminarians being ordained first as subdeacons,…

Source: The National Herald BY CONSTANTINE S. SIRIGOS NEW YORK – While the dollar amount of the pledges to the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine is impressive – $35.76 million to date – communities rooted in humble origins in homelands like Greece are still touched by in-kind contributions, and on December 21 the principals and families of the Titan Group and Corona Ready Mix received a special tour of the construction site at Ground Zero in appreciation of their donating all the concrete for the new Church. Father Alexander Karloutsos, Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Archdiocese’s Executive…

Source: The National Herald NEW YORK – The creation of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine is a labor of love, but it is also a complex endeavor involving construction, fund raising, and outreach, and each element is proceeding apace through the Christmas season. The Archdiocese’s Executive Director of Administration Jerry Dimitriou and Andrew Veniopoulos, who is the project assistant, are constantly conducting tours of the site and making presentations  for Greek and non-Greek individuals and organizations. The day before St. Nicholas’ December 6 Feast Day Veniopoulos escorted Congressmen Luke Messer from Indiana and Gus Bilirakis to the Church’…
