Source: The National Herald BY CONSTANTINE S. SIRIGOS NEW YORK – Although the blessing of the site at Ground Zero has been postponed until the Fall and the start of construction has been pushed back to September after earlier hopes for a July or August beginning, the new Church of St. Nicholas may still be completed in time for Pascha 2016. His Grace Bishop Andonios of Phasiane, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, informed The National Herald that due diligence and the desire to “negotiate the best price for materials to keep the cost down,” has delayed the finalization of some agreements.…
Source: St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary In fall 2012 St. Vladimir’s Seminary began requiring all incoming Master of Divinity students to complete one full unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), as a means to strengthen their pastoral abilities. Now seminary Trustee Emeritus Brian Gerich, Hon. D.H.L., is further supporting seminarians in their pastoral training, by paying for hospital fees related to their CPE programs. Dr. Gerich recently pledged $20,000. Dr. Al Rossi directs Field Education a year for the next few years to underwrite the fees, which can exceed $1,000 per student. Students who have successfully completed their CPE training from the spring…
Source: The National Herald BY CONSTANTINE S. SIRIGOS NEW YORK – The World Trade Center site will remain a hive of construction activity for years to come, but visitors on Saturday, April 26 saw that much of the master plan for Ground Zero is complete. The iconic Freedom Tower – officially known as One World Trade Center – looks finished from many angles and tourists and New Yorkers alike cannot wait for its grand opening, if not this year, then in 2015. A number of office towers are open and the 9/11 memorial and museum receive thousands of guests daily.…
Source: The National Herald By Theodore Kalmoukos NEW YORK – Santiago Catralava, the prominent architect selected to design the New St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero, has a record replete with problematic projects and designs and legal problems, TNH has learned. De Zeen Magazine’s January 2 article, “Newer Story Older Story, Valencia to sue Calatrava over Falling Masonry at City of Arts and Sciences,” stated among other things that “Calatrava is facing legal action from his home city of Valencia [Spain] because parts of the opera house roof at his City of Arts and Sciences complex are falling…
Source: The New York Times By DAVID W. DUNLAP The World Trade Center’s best-kept secret has finally come to light. It is an elevated park, slightly larger than an acre and 25 feet above Liberty Street, that will command a panoramic view of the National September 11 Memorial when it opens to the public, probably in 2015. Liberty Park, as it is called, is meant to offer a pleasant and accessible east-west crossing between the financial district and Battery Park City; to create a landscaped forecourt for the new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church; to provide a gathering space for…
St. Nicholas Church, Destroyed on 9/11, to Rebuild With Byzantine Design Source: The New York Times By DAVID W. DUNLAP A gleaming, monumental and unmistakable symbol of Orthodox Christianity would rise at the south end of the National September 11 Memorial under plans drawn up for the new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The original St. Nicholas Church was crushed on Sept. 11, 2001, when the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Plans to replace it on the grounds of the new trade center, across Liberty Street from the memorial, have sputtered, stoppedand crept ahead in the intervening years. But no images of…
Source: The National Herald Sara Polsky – Curbed.com NEW YORK – A Greek-American newspaper (The National Herald) earlier this year reported that Santiago Calatrava was the frontrunner to design the rebuilt Church of St. Nicholas downtown. The Post hears from multiple sources that the rumors are indeed true: out of a dozen finalists, Calatrava has been chosen for the project—though he hasn’t yet signed a contract, so it’s certainly possible that he’ll be out of the Archdiocese’s price range. The rebuilding of the church has been a matter of controversy for years. The original church was destroyed on 9/11 and…
Source: Greek Reporter – USA The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos described the Diaspora as a “great chapter of our history” and as “Greece outside the borders of Greece” in an interview with the New York newspaper The National Herald. He is the first Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church to officially visit the Greek-American community in the last 50 years. Ieronymos was the guest of Archbishop Demetrios of America and his visit will start on May 15 in Brookline, Mass., adjacent to Boston, where he will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Theology at the Holy Cross Greek…

Source: St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary | Deborah (Malacky) Belonick [SVOTS Communications, Yonkers, NY] “It is now possible for students to come to our seminary with their tuition fully funded,” announced Archpriest John Behr, dean of St. Vladimir’s Seminary, Yonkers, NY, as he unfolded a new plan designed to help theological graduate students cover the cost of their education. “Effective for this coming academic year,” explained Fr. John, “we’re instituting a newly devised ‘matching grant’ program for students seeking either a Master of Divinity or Master of Arts degree in theology, and we’re expanding tuition grants available to students in…
Source: The National Herald Archbishop Demetrios and Vice President Biden had a lengthy discussion at the Archdiocese last week, as we reported. Oddly enough, they didn’t go in front of the TV cameras to make a statement, as is customary. The main topic of discussion revolved around issues dealing with the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Greek Orthodoxy. That’s all well and good. The Greek-American community has a duty to do whatever possible to make sure that the Patriarchate is able to exist and operate freely and safely. However, that is not enough. The community’s interests clearly extend beyond the Patriarchate, especially…
