Theme: “Orthodox Christianity in Russia & Eastern Europe: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives”
Before the collapse of communism, religion in Russia and Eastern Europe was rarely a topic of scholarly research. The prevalence of the secularization thesis in the West, combined with the dominance of militantly atheist regimes in the East, led scholars to assume that religion no longer mattered in the region. Moreover, long held stereotypes about the Orthodox Church contributed to the dismissal of Orthodoxy’s importance as a factor in Russian or East European history; only a few pioneers in the field challenged this tendency. Since the collapse of communism, however, religion has reasserted itself in the public sphere in the former communist bloc as in many other parts of the world. There has been a renewed appreciation of Orthodoxy’s significance in the history of the region, as well as growing interest among political scientists and anthropologists who study Russia and Eastern Europe.
This conference seeks to tap into a new wave of research on Orthodoxy in Russia and Eastern Europe. It is intended to be interdisciplinary, so we invite papers from a number of disciplinary perspectives: historical, anthropological, sociological, intellectual, literary, and/or political science. We also seek to cut across geographical lines, so papers can be concerned with the Russian Empire/Soviet Union and its successor states as well as Eastern Europe (former Habsburg and Ottoman empires, Romania, Bulgaria, and the former Yugoslavia). We invite papers that tap into the transnational dimensions of Orthodoxy—ties between Russia or Eastern Europe and the new world, for example, or Orthodox missions outside traditional territories. We also invite papers that explore the relationship of Orthodoxy to other religious traditions in the region.
The conference will include two keynote speakers: Dr. Lucian Turcescu (Concordia University, Montreal) and Dr. Gregory Freeze (Brandeis University).

Topic: “What is the Bible? The Patristic Doctrine of Scripture”
Join us in Princeton for dialogue, learning, and fellowship. Now in its third year, the “Florovsky Symposium” is known for combining churchly piety with high-level scholarly inquiry. It attracts a large and diverse cohort of established scholars, clergy, graduate students, and seminarians from around the country and the world.
The purpose of this year’s symposium is to re-open a consideration of the doctrine of Scripture for contemporary theology rooted in the tradition of the Fathers (Greek, Latin, and Oriental), an endeavor inspired by the theological vision of the 20th century’s foremost Orthodox Christian theologian, Fr. Georges Florovsky. That is: our interest is not in mere description of historical uses of Scripture or interpretive methods, but rather in the very nature of Scripture itself and its place within the whole economy of creation, revelation, and salvation. The symposium is organized by the Fr. Georges Florovsky Orthodox Christian Theological Society at Princeton University and the School of Christian Vocation and Mission at Princeton Theological Seminary.
We are offering a special reduced rate for everyone who registers before December 1, 2012: only $35 per person. This includes continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday, as well as program materials, tuition, and refreshments throughout the two days. Dinner on Friday night will not be provided. The schedule will allow ample time for groups to patronize one of the many eateries in downtown Princeton, all within easy walking distance of the symposium’s proceedings.

Our 16-17 February 2013 rendition of the Prayer in the Church Fathers symposium for Northern California will take place in beautiful San Francisco – one of the great centers for Orthodox life and culture in Western North America. Continuing the Institute’s fledgling tradition of providing the best in Orthodox symposia to the SF Bay area and region, this two-day conference will feature our main speaker, Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, who will be joined by regional speakers in the beautiful and prayerful surroundings of the Old Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary on Fulton Street, to provide a thoughtful, in-depth, engaging exploration of the heritage of prayer in the Fathers of Orthodoxy, and how that heritage is lived-out by the faithful today.

Theme: The No Fear Factor
Presented by: The Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States
The reality TV show Fear Factor features people who are willing to face their worst fears for notoriety and financial gain. We find it intriguing to watch people eat cockroaches, immerse themselves in a tank full of creepy worms with legs, and stay under water far too long with slimy eels crowding around their heads. The program reminds us that fear is an emotion that we are all very familiar with. In fact, if we are discomforted with watching this show for any length of time, it probably has something to do with reminding us of things and events that we fear or at least find uncomfortable.
Yet thinking of the program does make me wonder: Would I be willing to conquer my fears to do what Jesus asks me to do, just as these contestants overcome their fears for a moment in the spotlight on national TV?
There is no doubt that fear is no friend of our effectiveness for Christ. We are often fearful about witnessing, giving our money away, saying no to our friends, forgiving a cruel offense, saying yes to a short-term missionary assignment, or risking being misunderstood if we speak up for biblical values at the water-cooler. If Satan can get us stymied by fear, he doesn’t have to do much else to shut down our spiritual progress and usefulness.
Join us this year to talk about what it takes to succeed for Christ in the face of fear.

The Orthodox Church in America Diocese of New York and New Jersey is sponsoring the 3rd Annual Altar Server Retreat which will take place at Saint Basil’s Academy in Garrison, New York.
Saint Basil’s Academy has beautiful grounds offering dormitory style rooms, an indoor basketball court and an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool available for use. There is no charge to participate in the retreat! Arrival and registration is Friday, 1 March beginning at 4:00 pm. Bedding is supplied by the Academy. Participants should bring their own toiletries, their gold Sticharions (robes) and appropriate clothing for participation in the liturgical services. Shorts/sweats and bathing suits should be brought for basketball and swimming events. Warm clothes will be important for traveling outdoors from venue to venue. One chaperone will be required for every six-seven participants. Adult participants/servers will serve as chaperones. Altar servers staying only one night may be picked-up on Saturday evening, 2 March, following Vespers. Those remaining until Sunday, 3 March, may be picked-up after the Divine Liturgy and morning meal.

Family Winter Camp is an opportunity for people of all ages to share in the same fun and fellowship that our youth camp has been offering to youth for over 20 years now. Families will spend the weekend in our Retreat House connecting with other families from across the New England area as well as strengthening their relationships with each other and God.
Highlights of the weekend will include family-based activities and sessions as well as sledding and outdoor fun on the beautiful grounds of the St. Methodios Faith and Heritage Center located in the foothills of the White Mountains.

There will be an all-day symposium on violence and peace in contemporary culture featuring David Bentley Hart and three others. The symposium will conclude with a powerful piano concert with Orthodox pianist, Paul Barnes. He will be doing a west coast performance of composer, Father Ivan Moody’s “Nocturne of Light” which is based on the hymns of Holy Saturday.
Our presenters will unpack the most constructive models for understanding portrayals of violence and peace, the way these portrayals have functioned, and how they have affected individuals and communities in our culture.
