The Summer Youth Program at Holy Trinity Monastery was established to expose our young men to the rich spiritual heritage and legacy of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Its objectives are to nurture the development of the young men in the areas of spiritual discipline, steadfastness and sobriety through a structured program of participation in the monastic community.
The dates for the 2014 Program are Sunday, June 22 to Saturday, July 12. The age range for participants is 15 to 18 years old. During this three-week period the young men will attend and participate in the daily cycle of services and are expected to partake of the Mysteries of Holy Confession and Communion once a week. While attending meals in the monastery refectory they will listen to the daily readings of the lives of saints. There will be spiritual instruction in the Law of God on a daily basis and the young men will work alongside the monastics in their various daily obediences: tending the monastery’s cemetery, working in the vegetable garden, caring for the chickens, cooking for the brotherhood, helping with various construction and repair projects, etc. They will also have the opportunity to enjoy summer recreational activities such as sports, swimming, hiking, fishing, campfires, and field trips.
For more detailed information on applying to the Program please visit the Sign Up page.
Register now for this four–day program of intense liturgical training to be held from Sunday, June 22–Wednesday, June 25, 2014 on the campus of St. Vladimir’s Seminary. Held in conjunction with the Orthodox Church in America’s Diaconal Vocations Program (DVP), this workshop is for deacons and lay diaconal candidates and will be supported by celebration of the Divine Liturgy and other services.
Intensive workshops in the Practicum aim to provide participants with the skills needed to serve effectively in the Orthodox Church as an attentive server, deacon, or priest. Attention will be given to the liturgical patterns of movement that inform the entire rite of the Church. Participants will also receive guidance on concelebrations and hierarchical celebrations so that they can effectively prepare for such occasions. In addition to practicums, focused presentations by faculty will augment the deacon’s understanding of his place in the liturgical life of the Church and the deacon’s broader vocation as a symbol to the faithful of the diakonia of Christ our Lord. Instruction in public speaking and vocal technique will also be offered.

The Diocese of the Midwest and The Diocese of Western Pennsylvania will host a Small Parish Forum at Christ the Savior Church. Titled “Help, Hope, Stability and Identity,” the forum will cater to the numerous “small” parishes in the two dioceses.
Workshops and presentations will examine ways to determine realistic goals toward which parishes with memberships of 50 or less souls can work, based on their respective regions’ economics and demographics and their unique talents and strengths. Participants will learn how their parishes can achieve stability, build a positive self-image, and accept their calling to live a life in Christ without necessarily becoming “big.” For parishes prepared and desiring to grow, fresh ideas adapted and relevant to the realities of small churches will prove invaluable.
The forum’s agenda — yet to be finalized — will include panel discussions, a music workshop focusing on the small parish choir, a keynote speaker, parallel sessions for clergy and laity, and case studies. A welcome reception is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, while the closing session will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 12.
Sessions will take place at Christ the Savior Church of Byesville. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Best Western, 4929 East Pike, I-70, Exit 160, Zanesville, OH. The special group rate — which includes breakfast — is only $67.00. Please call the hotel directly at 740-453-6300 and request the “Orthodox Small Parish Forum” room rate.
To register and/or to obtain additional information, including workshops themes, speakers, and a wealth of information, visit www.ocadwpa.org/smallparishforum.html.
