Now is the time to get excited! The Senior and Junior U.O.L. Chapters of St. Vladimir’s Parish in Parma, Ohio would like to officially invite you to the 66th Annual UOL Convention! The convention, being held July 24-28, 2013 at the fabulous Embassy Suites in Independence, OH is located just 4 miles from the parish center and Parma’s famed Ukrainian Village. Your visit to Parma will be full of many exciting events!

Business sessions will begin Wednesday evening followed by a hospitality night to welcome you to the convention! Thursday morning will begin with Divine Liturgy at St. Vladimir’s Cathedral followed by brunch at the Embassy Suites hotel. Business sessions in the afternoon will be followed by a trip into Cleveland. Guests will tour the brand new Cleveland Aquarium and enjoy dinner and dancing at the beautiful Windows on the River.

Bandura Course — August 2 – 16
This two-week course focuses on over seven hours of daily group instruction in: the technique of playing bandura, bandura history, solo and ensemble playing and singing, music lectures, elementary music theory (as needed). There will be free time for sport, swimming, and relaxation. This course is designed for teenaged children (12 and older) and adults of all ages. Founded in 1979, Kobzarska Sich unites bandura players from all over to learn and share more about bandura and its unique art form. Kobzarska Sich is held at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Camp in Emlenton, Pennsylvania. All Saints offers over 90 acres of pristine beauty in the Allegheny Mountains. The camp’s facilities include volleyball courts, a swimming pool, 10 cabins for participants, a Millennium Cultural Center with housing and classrooms, and an activities pavilion, tennis and basketball courts, an infirmary and nature trails.

Conference for Catechists, Diaconal Vocations Students: Detroit

A conference for catechists, Diaconal Vocations program students, and those interested in furthering their understanding of the Orthodox Christian faith will be sponsored by the Diocese of the Midwest at Saint Andrew’s House here August 8-9, 2014.

His Grace, Bishop Alexander and Priest Elijah Mueller, Director, will facilitate the program.

The conference is especially designed for those who took the Late/Diaconal Vocations course before the present Diocesan program was instituted and who need to move forward with petitioning, those interested in beginning the program but live in an area where no local group has been established, those who want to participate in a diaconal practicum, and those who have taken courses within the program who desire to meet for further education and fellowship.

The conference will feature a variety of classes, a practicum, opportunities to meet with Bishop Alexander and the Vocations Director, “hands on” assistance with petition paperwork, and presentations on lay catechesis. Presentations on Orthodox spirituality round out the program.

Costs and final schedule have yet to be established. Financial assistance will be available for those who request it.

The workshop will be an intense 6 days where the student will create an icon using acrylic/gouache techniques.


Learn basic color mixing, drawing and painting techniques.
 Be instructed in the history and theology of the icon.
 Receive personal instruction and demonstration for each stage of painting.
 Gain a deeper understanding of the mystical art of the icon and its place in the Church.

On August 31, the St. Vladimir’s Seminary community will mark the ecclesiastical new year by gathering for a free, public lecture offered by Dr. Elizabeth Theokritoff.  A scholar and translator, Dr. Theokritoff has authored a 2009 SVS Press book in the “Foundations” series, Living in God’s Creation: Orthodox Perspectives on Ecology. The talk is sponsored by the student-led St. Herman’s Society for Orthodox Ecology, and will be held on campus.

Dr. Elizabeth Theokritoff completed a doctoral thesis in liturgical theology at Oxford under the supervision of  The Most Rev. Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, and subsequently served for seven years as Secretary of the Anglican-Orthodox Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius in London. A translator of theological works from modern Greek, Dr. Theokritoff serves on the faculty of  The Distance Learning Master’s Degree Program in Ecumenical Studies (DLPES) at the Institute of Ecumenical Studies. Co-editor of the Cambridge Companion to Orthodox Christian Theology and author of numerous articles.  Dr. Theokritoff has also lectured at the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge, UK.

With the blessing and presence of His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin of San Francisco and the West and the support of Bishop-elect David (Mahaffey) of the historic diocese of Alaska, a cruise and conference at sea will be held September 6-13, 2014.

In addition to exploring Juneau, Sitka, Glacier Bay, and other sites on the Holland America Westerdam, conference participants will attend a wide variety of daily lectures, services and workshops offered by Archpriest Michael Oleksa, a recognized authority on Alaskan history and spirituality, and Priest Laurent Cleenewerck, Rector of Saint Innocent Church, Eureka, CA, who is also an academic and author.
