Dr. Long discusses Stephen Muse’s book, When Hearts Become Flame. Chaplain Hart gives his perspective on the pastoral counseling work.
Rev. Dn. Stephen Muse, PhD is a pastoral counselor and marriage and family therapist who serves as Director of the Pastoral Counselor Training program and Clinical Services for the D. A. & Elizabeth Turner Ministry Resource Center of the Pastoral Institute, Inc. in Columbus, Georgia where he directs a nationally recognized week-long intensive outpatient program for clergy renewal. He is a teacher and training supervisor for the U.S. Army Family Life military chaplains and supervisor in clniical field education for the Counseling Psychology doctoral program of Auburn University. Dr. Muse has taught and led professional workshops internationally and throughout the U.S. in areas of his specialties which include Orthodox Christian spirituality, healing from trauma, combat and moral injury, marriage as a spiritual path, and care for the caregiver (clergy and helping professionals’ burnout). He has conducted national award-winning research in the area of religious integration and clinical empathy of therapists. He served as Managing Editor of the Pastoral Forum from 1993-2002 and contributed a regular newspaper column on spirituality and health for many years. He holds Diplomate certification in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors; is a Diplomate in Professional Psychotherapy with the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy; Diplomate Board certified in Traumatic Stress and Board certified in Clinical Hypnotherapy. He is an approved AAMFT Supervisor; a Board certified clergy and life coach, and licensed in the state of Georgia as a Professional Counselor and as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
Prior to his reception into the Greek Orthodox Church where he currently serves as a deacon and is set apart by Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta for ministry as a pastoral counselor, Dr. Muse pastored a Presbyterian congregation for 11 years and helped begin an out-patient psychiatric clinic in Delta, PA. He is past president of the Orthodox Christian Association of Medicine, Psychology and Religion and a founder and first parish council President of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Columbus. He and his wife Claudia have four children: a daughter killed in 1982, a daughter 35, a son 30, a daughter 29, a grand-daughter, 5 and a grandson 6 months.
