For many years, the Orthodox Christian Laity (OCL) Board has been blessed to have Father Thomas Hopko, of blessed memory, serve as an advisory board member. We have been enriched by his prayers and council. He never hesitated to express his views. He provided the organization with a perspective that was strong, clear and related to his convictions and integrity. From all that is being written at this time of his falling asleep in the Lord, we are overwhelmed by his service to the Orthodox Faith in the United States as pastor and teacher. He was an untiring servant of the Lord. Our prayers are extended to his family. May His Memory Be Eternal!
In addition to the Bible, the two most valuable books about the faith for me are Father Thomas’s The Winter Pascha and The Lenten Spring. Since 1983 and 1984, I revisit them yearly during these two liturgical cycles. They are written in clear, passionate, beautiful language to help me appreciate these two feasts that define our Orthodox Christian faith. They are the works of an inspired teacher and pastor. Now they will have even more meaning for me. What a legacy he leaves with these two works.
The Holy Spirit guided Father Thomas in his many roles, but for me his greatest gift was that of teacher. His words, thoughts and books will inspire generations to come as the Church Father of our Orthodox Faith in this land.
