NEW YORK – Father John Vlahos, currently the pastor of the Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville, NY, has been assigned as the new Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan. He will be formally installed by Archbishop Demetrios of America on Sunday, June 22 and will begin his new duties immediately thereafter.

In May of 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America assigned Father John Vlahos to the Church of the Holy Resurrection, where he serves as the second proistamenos in the history of the parish.

The letter sent by Fr. Vlahos to the Brookville parish, where he will celebrate his final Divine Liturgy on June 15, follows:

“Beloved family and friends of the Holy Resurrection,

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

“For the past six years, I have had the honor and privilege of serving as the priest of the Church of the Holy Resurrection.  You have all welcomed my family and me with open arms, open minds and open hearts. We have become a family. As I am sure we can all attest, the mystery of life, leads us on paths that we do not always anticipate. We pray that wherever the Lord leads us will be blessed and salvific. With the assurance of God’s love and grace, I am being called to embark on a new path as His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios has asked me to assume a new responsibility within our Holy Archdiocese. On Sunday, June 22nd, 2014, I will be installed by His Eminence as the priest of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York City.

“I look forward to us being together for our glorious festival this weekend, highlighted by the feast of Pentecost on Sunday. Then, our final Divine Liturgy together will be on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15th, 2014.

“I know the Archdiocese will select a wonderful successor in whose good and capable hands our Parish family will continue to flourish as a deeply committed and Christ-centered community.

“I hope and pray that our Lord continues to bless each and every one of you in your shared ministry of love and service. I love you all and I will miss you terribly.  Please know that I am truly honored to have been your priest!

    Faithfully,

    Fr. John

According to the website of the Brookville parish, “In May of 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America assigned Father John Vlahos to the Church of the Holy Resurrection, where he now serves as the second proistamenos in the history of our parish.

Both his parents immigrated to the United States in the 1960’s from villages just outside of Corinth. He has one sister, Faye and two brothers, Steve and Nicholas. Upon graduation from Merrilville High School in 1993, he enrolled at Indiana University and in 1997 he graduated with a degree in Public Finance.

“Upon graduation from Indiana University in 1997 he enrolled at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts. In May 2001, he graduated with a Masters of Divinity Degree.

“On June 10, 2001, in their home parish of Saints Constantine and Helen, in Merrilville, Indiana he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Tina Manolopoulos.

“From July 2001 through July 2002, Father John served as Assistant Director of the St. Photios National Shrine in St. Augustine, Florida. He was ordained to the Holy Diaconate on January, 27, 2002 in Merrillville, Indiana by Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago.

“In July 2002 he was appointed Archdeacon to His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios of America in which capacity he served until January 2006. In his capacity as Archdeacon, Fr. John participated in both the ground breaking ceremony and the Thyranixia at our parish.

“He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by Archbishop Demetrios at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Hempstead, New York in 2006 and served as a priest of that community from that time until he joined the Church of the Holy Resurrection.

“On April 11th, 2010, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios bestowed the offikion of Economos upon Fr. John.
